Actual Size Company Members
Artistic Director 2018/19
Michelle has been a competitive Ballroom and Latin dancer since turning three having successes Nationally and Internationally. After taking a year long respite from competitions Michelle wanted to expand in the field of dance bringing her to study BA Dance at GSA, University of Surrey discovering Contemporary Dance. Having performed in HOFESH SHECTER's and East London Dance in the EAST WALL project she has developed a passion for choreography and performance. Obtaining the privilege of working under choreographer JOSEPH TOONGA Michelle is inspired this year to create a platform for diversity in dance on stage by exploring everyone’s individual movement languages using customary art forms. Her aim is to invigorate the members to strip back and tap into the deepest emotions; a part that is rarely accessed in modern life.
Gabija was a member of Actual Size in her first year at Surrey 2016/17. Originally a Hip-Hop dancer, she enjoyed being part of Actual Size, and felt her "uniqueness" was appreciated and not suppressed saying the company gave her "the ability to explore the alliance of different styles." Now Co-directing Actual Size Gabija wants to expose members to same level of diversity. Incorporating a layer of different training for contemporary dancers in order to encourage bodies to move in ways they've not yet allowed themselves to. Through strong dynamic changes, musicality, movement and choreographic choices Gabija wants the audience to feel like they want to join the dancers on stage.
Company Assistant 2018/19
Mary became a member of Actual Size in 2017 when she began her BA Dance studies at GSA. Actual size helped to boost her confidence and provided her with new ways of moving and thinking about the body. Going into her second year Mary is looking to have more involvement and responsibility within the company, hoping to become artistic director in the final year of her degree. Mary is contemporary trained yet has engaged in a variety of different styles throughout her training hoping to create an interesting variation of movement in her own style of dance she can continue to develop in her career and future training.
Mary is now the Actual Size Company Assistant as Mary is interested in learning about the administrative and management work of Actual Size developing her knowledge and skills around this and so preparing for final year when Mary would like to be an artistic director of Actual Size.
